BAHAMA TERRACE, WINDEMERE, THE PINES
Neighborhood Cleanup Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025
The next City of Stuart Neighborhood Cleanup is scheduled this Saturday, September 20, 2025, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. for the residential neighborhoods of Bahama Terrace, Windemere, and The Pines.
During the cleanup, sanitation trucks comb the streets to collect bulk items such as appliances and furniture, miscellaneous trash, and yard waste that is to be placed curbside.
The Martin County HazMobile will be parked at the host location on Windemere Drive, just inside the front entrance of The Pines subdivision off Jensen Beach Boulevard, for the convenient drop-off of household hazardous waste such as paints, oils, and household cleaners. Residents may also bring old electronics for recycling to this same host location.
For a complete listing of acceptable hazardous materials, or to find out which month the City will host a Neighborhood Cleanup in your neighborhood, visit www.cityofstuart.us or call 772-600-1206.

Voices of Freedom
In honor of Constitution Week, the Stuart community gathered for the annual public reading of the U.S. Constitution — a tradition that celebrates unity, civic pride, and the enduring values of our nation’s founding document.
Participants included students, elected officials, community leaders, law enforcement, public safety personnel, and engaged members of the public — all lending their voices to this meaningful event.
Special thanks to the City of Stuart Recreation Department for organizing this cherished tradition, to the Martin County Library for graciously hosting, and to all the volunteers who took time to read and reflect on the Constitution together.

What is Single-Stream Recycling?
If you're a City of Stuart sanitation customer, you're already participating in single-stream recycling—a convenient system where all your recyclable materials go into your blue recycling cart. No need to sort paper from plastic or cans from cardboard—just toss them all in and roll your cart to the curb!
But what happens after your cart is emptied? Let’s take a look behind the scenes.
From Curbside to Recycling Center
Your recyclables are taken by City sanitation trucks to the Martin County Solid Waste Transfer & Recycling Facility. Once at the recycling facility, the loads are dumped to a tipping floor, sorted, then loaded onto trucks for transfer to the St. Lucie County Baling and Recycling Facility, where the sorting magic begins:
(1) Tipping Floor: Trucks unload materials onto the tipping floor, where recyclables wait to be processed.
(2) Pre-Sorting: Items move along a conveyor belt where workers manually remove hazardous or non-recyclable items.
(3) Fiber & Glass Separation: Paper products and glass are sorted out early in the process.
(4) Optical Sorting: Advanced technology uses eddy currents to identify and separate:
• PET plastics (#1, like water bottles)
• HDPE plastics (#2, like milk jugs and detergent bottles)
(5) Manual Quality Check: Workers inspect plastics for quality before they’re sent to designated bunkers.
(6) Metal Recovery:
• A ferrous magnet pulls out steel cans.
• A second optical sorter separates aluminum cans from remaining materials.
(7) Final Sorting: Mixed plastics (#1–#7) are baled together, while aluminum is manually checked one last time before baling.
A New Life for Old Materials
Once sorted and baled, these materials are sold to recycling companies. From there, they’re transformed into new products—like recycled paper, aluminum siding, picnic tables, and even airplane parts!
What Not to Recycle
While many items are recyclable, some can cause serious issues in the sorting process:
• Plastic bags, plastic film, and stringy materials (like garden hoses or holiday lights) can jam machinery and pose safety risks.
• These items are removed manually and sent to the landfill—where they may end up polluting the environment.
Better option: Take plastic bags to your local grocery store. Or better yet, switch to reusable bags!
Want to learn more about what you can and can’t recycle? Visit the City of Stuart’s recycling page or contact our Sanitation Division.

DISASTER PREPARENDNESS
Myths vs. Facts
As hurricane season peaks, so does the flood of misinformation. At a time when preparation can mean the difference between safety and disaster, it's critical to separate fact from fiction. Let’s bust some common myths about storm protection and set the record straight.
MYTH #1: Taping windows prevents them from breaking.
FACT: Taping your windows does not prevent them from shattering. In fact, it can create larger, more dangerous shards if the glass breaks. Instead, use impact-resistant windows or hurricane shutters for real protection.
MYTH #2: Cracking a window during a storm equalizes pressure.
FACT: This outdated advice can actually make things worse. Opening a window invites wind and rain inside, increasing the risk of structural damage. Keep all windows and doors tightly sealed during a storm.
MYTH #3: If you don’t live on the coast, you’re safe.
FACT: Hurricanes can cause inland flooding, tornadoes, and wind damage far from the shoreline. Always monitor forecasts and follow emergency guidance, no matter where you live.
MYTH #4: Sandbags are enough to stop flooding.
FACT: Sandbags can help redirect water, but they’re not foolproof. For better protection, consider flood barriers, sump pumps, and proper drainage systems around your home.
MYTH #5: Home insurance covers all hurricane damage.
FACT: Most standard policies do not cover flood damage. You’ll need a separate flood insurance policy through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or a private insurer.
MYTH #6: You only need to prepare once a storm is named.
FACT: By the time a storm is named, supplies may be scarce and evacuation routes congested. The best time to prepare is before hurricane season begins—and to stay ready throughout.
Storm-Ready Tips:
- Install hurricane shutters or impact-resistant windows.
- Secure outdoor furniture and loose items.
- Keep an emergency kit with food, water, medications, and batteries.
- Know your evacuation zone and have a plan in place.
- Sign up for local emergency alerts.
- Stay informed. Stay prepared. Stay safe.
