| This Busy Port Has a $3.2 Billion Plan |
| Infrastructure keeps America competitive, but only if we keep investing in it. Here's what that looks like in practice. |
The Port of Long Beach, the second-busiest port in America, is ready to double its cargo capacity with a $3.2 billion investment plan.
- The California port handles nearly one-in-five containers moving through all U.S. ports every year.
- The everyday products on your store shelves, the parts in your local factory, the equipment your business is waiting on—there's a good chance it came through Long Beach.
Why it matters: When this port gets backed up, families pay more and wait longer. When it runs well, businesses grow, and communities thrive.
- Congress has until this September to reauthorize the surface transportation law that keeps projects like this moving.
Big picture: Port CEO Dr. Noel Hacegaba is betting big on rail. The centerpiece of the plan is the Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility, designed to improve rail connectivity and reduce congestion—getting products from ship to shelf faster and more cheaply.
What they're saying:
- "Rail is the key to our future," Dr. Hacegaba told business leaders at the U.S. Chamber's Keep America Moving Summit in March. "Speed to market is a key to success, but rail connectivity is the key to our future."
- His message to Congress was direct: "Investments in infrastructure are investments in the national economy."
What's next: The U.S. Chamber's Keep America Moving initiative is calling on policymakers, businesses, and communities to prioritize continued federal infrastructure investment before the September deadline hits. |
