Fire Rescue Mechanic

Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Fire Chief or designee, incumbent is responsible for performing maintenance and repairs of fire rescue apparatus, a variety of diesel/gas vehicles, equipment, appliances, tools and equipment. Routinely handles and prioritizes employee complaints or concerns on fire rescue apparatus or equipment.  

 
Responsibilities include but are not limited to troubleshooting and diagnosing problems on a variety of fire rescue apparatus, diesel/gas equipment, small engines, tools and equipment.  Provide logistical support as needed for fire rescue operation but does not include emergency response or operations. This position requires a take-home department vehicle for purposes of call in outside of regular business hours for vehicle repairs and/or significant emergency situations. In the event of a natural or man-made disaster impacting our area, the incumbent may be required to report to duty.  
 
This is a safety sensitive position requiring screening for illegal substance and alcohol use. 

Examples of Essential Functions
Diagnoses and repairs all types of fire rescue equipment and apparatus,  including but not limited to: ladder trucks, fire engines , ambulances, , electrical and hydraulic systems, air brake systems, air conditioning, steering systems, small engines, portable pumps, fire pumps, generators, various types of valves and assemblies for fire pumps, and a variety of special equipment including power tools, breathing air compressor, extrication tools, mounting equipment, hoses, nozzles, lights, electrical equipment , water tanks, and other Fire Rescue vehicles and equipment.

 
Troubleshoots, analyzes and diagnoses a variety of vehicle problems including automobiles, medium duty and heavy-duty fire trucks and ambulances, SUVs, fire equipment, hydraulic operated pumps and tools, small engine equipment and other equipment as necessary.
 
Diagnoses and repairs out of service apparatus, vehicles, and equipment promptly.
 
Uses specialized hand and power tools to make and complete repairs. 
 
Maintains various records, reports, and manuals, preventative maintenance schedules, and parts inventory.

Maintenance and repair of gasoline or diesel driven engines and related auto equipment, Fire Rescue apparatus & equipment, machinery, and tools.

Employee specializes in Fire/Emergency Vehicle Technician duties and holds or shall obtain EVT Certifications.
 
Calibrates and services gas monitors and various other small devices requiring periodic calibration.
 
Coordinates or performs some minor station and appliance repairs, including station power generators and ensuring fuel tank compliance.
